Rob's Rambling

FNB are idiots.

I think it's rather fetching, don't you?    I suppose I shouldn't actually be particularly surprised or irritated that FNB capitulated to the petulant knee-jerk reaction that we've all come to expect when something touches on the hallowed integrity of our ruling party. But I am.      Yes yes, I know that there  was a lot of financial pressure on them...

The Tutu Elephant

The Elephant     Let's address the rather large elephant in the room, shall we?     If you're reading this and you're a white South African, congratulations - you are privileged and have benefited from Apartheid. You know it, I know it and so does everyone else.     That's the plain and simple truth of it - yes, I know that many white people are...

4 Hour Body: Day 3

Posted by Rob July 28, 2011, under Personal | No Comments |
It's Day 3 and so far I haven't grown tired of anything on the 4HB - the recipes are many and the food is pretty good (Not sure if it'll continue like that but I guess we'll see) I'm getting into the routine of everything now - wake up 6:30 (which I would anyway), drink +- 1l cold water, cook breakfast, eat breakfast. I've decided to measure every two days rather than...

4 Hour Body: Day 1

Posted by Rob July 25, 2011, under Personal | No Comments |
So, after having looked at a number of diets, plans and so forth, I've settled on the Four Hour Body that Tim Ferris is behind. It sounds interesting, touting high-protein, low carbs and some quite interesting ideas. Measurement is important to the 4 Hour Body and since I do so enjoy seeing actual physical results, I'm glad to have something to compare with. Measurements cover: BMI...

Setting some personal goals

Posted by Rob July 10, 2011, under Personal | 4 Comments |
Hi, my name's Rob and I'm an IT guy. I'm pretty good at it actually and I'm continually exercising my mind with new coding so that's all good. Unfortunately, I'm beginning to adopt what I will delicately put as the "typical IT guy" physique and that just won't do. So, personal goals then - which I need to do my damnedest to stick to. Do 50-100 pullups by...

Incredible Connection are idiots

Posted by Rob June 25, 2010, under Personal | 2 Comments |
The avid reader will notice a trend with most of my blog posts. I choose an idiot and I blog about them. It's a simple formula and the subjects usually provide themselves pretty easily. I don't think anyone would argue that there's a dearth of idiocy around. Today it's Incredible Connection.   I guess it's partially my own fault for using them in the first place...

Support is slippery… but my blood is still Green and Gold

Posted by Rob June 16, 2010, under South Africa | 3 Comments |
As anyone who saw the South African fans leaving in droves this evening could tell you, support is the slipperiest substance known to humankind.     Tonight something fairly tragic happened - Bafana Bafana lost 3 - 0 to Uruguay and were shunted (almost) out of the first round of the Soccer World Cup. Now, whether you feel that some potentially dodgy calls by the ref...

Installing OpenQRM on Ubuntu 9.10

Seeing a virtual machine purring along is a thing of beauty. OpenQRM is a fantastic web based package for managing your system, private cloud and virtualization technologies. It integrates seamlessly with both KVM and XEN.   So, here's a brief HOW TO for installing OpenQRM on Ubuntu Server 9.10. This HOW TO assumes you've already installed the virtualization platform of your choice,...

The End of Lost (spoilers)

Posted by rob May 24, 2010, under Personal | 2 Comments |
At the moment I'm a little torn. I'm not sure whether to feel upset or happy but I'm guessing it'll settle on a mixture of both.   On one hand, I don't feel as screwed over as the Wachowski Wangs made me feel. But on the other, I'm left with a sort of empty feeling.   Was this really the best way they could think of to end Lost? I mean yes, technically Lost (and...
